This free crochet bucket hat pattern is perfect for the beginner crocheter. The entire pattern is worked in single crochets. I’ve included a step-by-step video tutorial with timestamps to work along with the written pattern.
It’s crazy to know that I’ve seen the bucket hat come & go out of fashion at least 3 times. I personally fell in love when I saw LL Cool J rock the leather Kangol in the ’80s. Then in the ’90s from R&B singer Aaliyah wearing a Tommy Hilfiger bucket hat. She was my fashion Icon.
Now its resurfacing again in a more glorious way! Crochet bucket hats are taking over the web, with the help of supermodel Bella Hadid. That put the crochet world into a frenzy. You can look at “Crochet TikTok” without seeing tons of versions of the crochet bucket hat.
But this fashion statement is much older than the above-mentioned.
Bucket Hat History
The bucket hat was introduced around the 1900s. Originally made from wool felt or tweed cloth, these hats were traditionally worn by Irish farmers and fishermen as protection from the rain, because the lanolin from the unwashed (raw) wool made these hats naturally waterproof
In the 1960s, the bucket hat was adapted as a ladies’ fashion item. The hat became popular by Hip Hop artists in the 1980s and remained until the 1990s. More recently, it has re-emerged as a fashion catwalk item after being sported by celebrities such as Rihanna.

About The Yarn
Felici yarn is super soft, machine washable, self-striping yarn. Typically, this yarn is only available in sock yarn, but now they have worsted weight!!! I’m considered color incompetent. Even as an adult, I still have trouble matching my clothes, lol. This yarn does all the work for you. Just look at these bright crochet mittens. You can’t help but smile.
Felici yarn is a Superwash Merino at 19.5 microns (layman’s translation: super-duper soft) that will appease even the most sensitive of skin, while nylon lends strength and durability. Add machine washability, and you have the perfect yarn for any next-to-skin, everyday accessories, scarves, cowls, hats, or baby clothes. With the heavier weight, your projects will crochet up quicker than ever, leaving more opportunities to play with stripes of every color.
