It can be so hard to find good crochet patterns for men’s accessories, so sometimes you have to create your own! I decided to take it one step further by designing an all-in-one men’s crochet hat that could also be converted into a cowl.
Don’t worry ladies, you can wear it too!
This free men’s crochet pattern is such a fun feature, and it’s actually really practical too. As an added bonus, if your man has long hair like mine, then he can even wear this hat when he has his hair up.
Sometimes it’s hard to crochet hats for men because they can end up looking too girly. If you are worried about what colors to use, you really can’t go wrong with classic red and black.
You could also opt for a hat in his favorite team colors. Keep it simple with two solid colors. Sometimes variegated and color-changing yarns can make your projects look too messy, especially with textured designs like this one.
Yes, I’ve turned up the texture in this design with two of my favorite crochet techniques: popcorn stitches and crocheting in the 3rd loop.
Adding texture to your crochet projects is an easy way to make them extra special without being too frilly. Plus you get to flex a little bit and show off your awesome crochet skills!
Wear it as a crochet cowl, mask, beanie, or messy bun hat! The choice is totally up to you.
Of course, if you’re going to make a textured crochet project, then you should make sure that the yarn you choose has a good stitch definition!
About the yarn
The Mighty Stitch yarn that I used to make the sample for this design really shows off texture well. It’s also very affordable (especially for a wool/ acrylic blend) and machine washable.
Mighty Stitch is a #5 bulky weight yarn. But it definitely feels more like a full worsted weight. Please don’t mark this against this yarn. I absolutely love it. It has an amazing luster & it feels like magic on the hook. Just make sure that you check your gauge.
The Mighty Stitch is a Superwash Superhero! A crafting powerhouse combining 20% Superwash Wool and 80% Acrylic, this yarn is perfect for hats, scarves, and blankets, too! When you need an easy-care yarn in a wide range of gorgeous hues, you’re sure to think, “Mighty Stitch to the Rescue!”

Note about the 3rd Loop
The 3rd loop is neither the front loop or the back loop. If you tilt your work toward you, then you will see the 3rd loop. Working into this 3rd loop pushes your front and back loops forward to create a decorative ridge. Watch the video if you get stuck!
