Free Crochet Round Bag Pattern – Fun & Colorful

crochet round bag pattern

Vintage meets modern in this fabulous crochet round bag pattern. This stylish and functional granny circle bag is perfect for summer. Prepare to get a ton of compliments every time you wear it! I chose to use Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran for this design because of the wide color selection and the longevity of cotton yarn. You can really use any kind of yarn for this project, though – including scrap yarn!

I have included instructions for 3 different strap lengths depending on the height of the wearer, so you can be sure that it’s going to be a great fit. I love a good crossbody crochet bag pattern because I don’t have to worry about it slipping off my shoulder. A quirky and colorful handbag is a total fashion statement!

After you make one crochet round bag for yourself and you see how quick and easy it is, you will definitely want to make one for an upcoming birthday or special occasion like Mother’s Day. (Y’all know that Mother’s Day is May 9th this year, right? It’s coming up quick!)

Gauge

The first two rounds of the circular part of the crochet bag pattern should be approximately 2.5” (6 cm) across.

Notes

  • Ch 3 counts as a dc.
  • Fasten off at the end of every round and attach a new color of yarn where indicated for the next round. There is no set order to the color changes.
  • Stitch counts given in clusters refer to groups of double crochet stitches, regardless of the number of individual stitches in each group.
  • Your work will likely curl quite a bit on the 3rd and 7th rounds. Keep going and it will straighten out!

Over 5’8 (1.7 meters) ch 256.

Sl st to join to the first chain and form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, dc first ch, sk next ch, *2 dc next ch, sk next ch, rep from *  around, sl st top of ch-3 to join. (13:04)

Assembly

Take one circle. Place a stitch marker (M1) in any cluster sp. Count 13 clusters from the marker, place another stitch marker (M2). Those 13 clusters mark the opening of the bag.

Wrap the strap around the circle and line up the clusters. You will be working through both the circle and the strap to attach the strap to the circle everywhere but those 13 clusters. Attach yarn at M1.

Ch 1, 2 sc same sp, *2 sc next clusters sp, repeat from * until M2. 2 sc in M2.

Now, working through the strap only, 2 sc each cluster sp around strap until you get back to M1, sl st first st to join to first sc. Fasten off.

Repeat with the second circle and the opposite side of the strap. Fasten off.

To make a closure, you can sew on a button and attach a small button loop made of chain stitches or you can sew on a zipper. Or just leave it open!
