Free Crochet Bow Pattern (that looks knit!)

Even though I’m quick to correct people who ask “What are you knitting?” by telling them “It’s not knit, it’s crochet!” that doesn’t mean I don’t like the way knit looks.

I’m actually a bit envious of people who can knit! I can knit. Kinda. Sorta. It’s not pretty, and it’s a painstakingly slow process for me. So when I get the hankering to make something that looks knit, what’s a crocheter supposed to do???

Well, then I make this cute bow crochet pattern, that’s what!

For today’s bow crochet pattern, we’ll be focusing on the tunisian knit stitch. Tunisian knit stitch is a fun variation on the tunisian simple stitch that makes a lovely thick fabric with that classic knit look.

For this small of a project, there’s no need to run out and buy the special tunisian hooks. You can use a normal crochet hook, yay! It’s even ok if the hook has an ergonomic handle on it like mine.

I love this little bow crochet pattern because it is so stinking cute and super quick to work up too. There’s no need to make two of them and stack them together for structure or to crochet a tube like other crochet bow patterns call for. This bow holds up very well on it’s own thanks to the thickness and stiffness of the stitch. I used this bow for a last minute Halloween costume – the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

15 g Paintbox Cotton Aran (or other worsted weight yarn)

6 mm hook

Pins for blocking

Abbreviations

US Terminology

ch = chain
st = stitch
yo = yarn over
tks = tunisian knit stitch (insert hook between front and back vertical bars of next stitch, yo, pull up loop)
rtn = return (yo, pull through 1 loop on hook, *yo, pull through 2 loops, repeat from * across.
dec = decrease (skip the next vertical bar)
tfs = tunisian full stitch (insert hook straight from front to back under the horizontal bar directly before the next vertical bar, yo, pull up loop)

Notes

It is normal for tunisian crochet to curl a bit. When you’re done with your project, simply wet it lightly, pin it down flat on a piece of cardboard, and leave it to dry. Then, voila, no more curl!

Ch 11

Row 1: Pull up a loop in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across, rtn.

Rows 2-3: tks 10, rtn. (10)

Row 4: tks 3, dec, tks 1, dec, tks 4, rtn. (8)

Rows 5-6: tks 8, rtn. (8)

Row 7: tks 2, dec, tks 1, dec, tks 3, rtn. (6)

Rows 8-9: tks 6, rtn. (6)

Row 10: tks 1, dec, tks 1, dec, tks 2, rtn. (4)

Rows 11-12: tks 4, rtn. (4)

Row 13: tks 1, tfs, tks 1, tfs, tks 2, rtn. (6)

Rows 14-15: tks 6, rtn. (6)

Row 16: tks 2, tfs, tks 1, tfs, tks 3, rtn. (8)

Band

Ch 5

Row 1: Pull up a loop in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across, rtn.

Rows 2-10 tks 4, rtn. (4)

Wrap the band around the middle of the bow. Sl st the last row to the first row to secure. Fasten off and weave in ends.

There is room between the band and the bow itself to thread a chain for a necklace or bow tie. You could also crochet a chain or thin tunisian crochet strip to go around your neck. It would also be adorable as a hair clip – simply hot glue a clip onto the back of the bow!
