Crochet Top written pattern & tutorial
This is one of the simplest crochet tops that I have created so far. If you can create a granny square, then you can create this short sleeve granny stitch top. Don’t think you can? I will take you step-by-step in creating this crochet sweater.
This is not your granny’s sweater. This is a great beginner top pattern. Simple enough for anyone to follow. If you always wanted to venture into crochet clothing, then this pattern is for you.
You can create this V-neck granny stitch top that in any worsted weight yarn.
This is an easy to intermediate pattern. Written stitch instructions, a video tutorial, and some instructional photos are included. This is written in US crochet terminology.

5 mm crochet hook

*Note: Pattern is written for one color. To change colors attach yarn to any ch-2 space and begin the pattern at ch 3.

Ch 136 (All sizes), sl st in 1st st to form a circle. Careful not to twist chain
Round 1: Ch 3 (Counts as dc and throughout), 2 dc in same st, ch 2, 3 dc in same st, ch 1. Sk 3 sts, 3 dc next st, ch 1, sk 3 sts, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) same st. Sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1 Rep from to 14 times total. Sk 3 sts, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) same st. Sk 3 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, sk 3 sts. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) same st. Sk 3 sts, 3 dc next st, ch 1 Rep from to 14 times total. Slp st to join. (36 3dc clusters)
Round 2: Sl st next 2 sts and ch-2 space. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 2, 3 dc in same space, ch 1. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 2 total times. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 15 total times. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 2 times total. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 15 total times. Slp st to join. (38 3dc clusters)
Round 3: Sl st next 2 sts and ch-2 space. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 2, 3 dc in same space, ch 1. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 3 total times. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1) Rep from to 16 times total. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 rep from to 3 times total. (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in the next ch-2 space. 3 dc next ch-1 space, ch 1 Rep from to 16 times total. Slp st to join. (40 3dc clusters)
All rounds: For all the remaining rounds of this granny top pattern, you will work (3dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1) into each corner. Between corners, work 3 dc, ch 1 into each ch-1 space.
Complete the number of rows per size as follows:
Round 4-13: Small only
Round 14-15: Medium only
Round 16: Large only.
Round 17-19: X-Large only.
Round 20-22: 2X-Large only
Sewing (Video 15:23)
Turn work wrong side out. Fold garment in half widthwise.
All sizes: Starting at the bottom seam of shirt. Sl st up 36 stitches to create the armhole on both sides of the shirt. Make any adjustment for personal fit
Bottom of shirt (Video reference 17:35) Turn right side out
Turn work upside down. Working on the bottom of shirt
Round 1: Attach yarn to any ch-1 space. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1) repeat across. Sl st top of ch 3 st to join.
Round 2-8: Sl st next 2 stitches and ch-1 space. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space, ch 1. 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1) repeat across. Sl st top of ch 3 st to join. Fasten off.
Optional Neckline (Video reference 20:40)
In front “V” of neckline align parallel matching stitches (see pictures). Sew corners and first dc group together. See the video for more detail.
